Anthocyanins - the colour of youth?

What´s the big deal about blueberries?

Is a more firm and less wrinkled skin on your wish list? Then you should eat more blueberries as they help improving your skin´s elasticity and firmness naturally.

All brightly coloured fruit and vegetables contain antioxidants – compounds which play a key role in protecting our bodies. But many naturally purple-coloured foods contain a certain antioxidant called anthocyanin. These are beneficial plant pigments which give fruit and vegetables their deep red, purple or blue color.

With their blue pigment, blueberries are particularly rich in anthocyanin. Much higher than most other fruit and vegetables. And anthocyanins help to protect our cells from excess oxidative damage caused by free radicals that come from stress and toxins.

Anthocyanins is a type of flavonoid that have shown to be especially beneficial when it comes to our skin health. It seems that one of their key roles is related to the stabilization of collagen - a protein found in the skin and other connective tissue such as joints, blood vessels, as well as muscles and ligaments.

Collagen has an elastic quality that helps to give our skin structure. Did you know that from the age of 20, we produce around 1% less collagen each year? This is what can make our skin less elastic, more fragile, and more prone to damage. One of the primary reasons why we develop lines and wrinkles as we age.

Of course, it’s not just the anthocyanins in blueberries and other brightly coloured fruit and vegetables which make them so good for our skin. Berries are also rich in Vitamin C, which has an important role to play in supporting our collagen production. Without enough Vitamin C in our diet, we simply cannot make collagen, therefore making it more likely you’ll see the effects of ageing on your skin.

Anthocyanins may also help to reduce inflammation in the skin caused by the sun’s rays by binding with the bodys own MMP enzymes, so slowing down collagen breakdown. In one study they found that anthocyanins from blueberries may actually give the skin some protection against UV rays from the sun. And photodamage, sun damaged skin is unfortunately something that few escapes.

Because the blueberries anthocyanins diminished the UVB radiation’s collagen destruction and inflammation, the study concluded, “anthocyanins from blueberry may be protective against UV-induced skin photoaging.”
